Melissa Flamand

Melissa Flamand is Nêhiyâw-iskwêw (Cree) and Anishinaabekwe (Chippewa) and is a first-year graduate student at New York University, currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Museum Studies. Prior to her time in Lenapehoking (NYC), Melissa studied linguistics and sociology at Dartmouth College. She has most recently worked in the Education and Civic Engagement department at the Peabody Essex Museum helping to create public programming which aims to support and highlight Indigenous Peoples and Traditional Knowledges. Melissa is passionate about the environment and climate justice, supporting and uplifting Indigenous voices and life ways, and is always eager to learn something new. In working with Local Contexts, she strives to support Indigenous communities through the promotion and implementation of TK and BC Labels and Notices for Indigenous data sovereignty.
