The first Local Contexts Summit will be held on May 10 in Lenapehoking (New York City). The Summit will bring together people from across the Local Contexts community with a focus on Indigenous authority, control, and governance in the archive and sciences.

This day-long event will showcase the current and potential use of Traditional Knowledge and Biocultural Labels and Notices, as well as examples of implementation within communities and institutions.

An increase in the prevalence and popularity of “digital repatriation” requires a critical analysis of Indigenous data governance. The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples recognizes the right to ‘maintain, control, protect and develop [Indigneous] cultural heritage. What measures can Indigenous communities take to protect these rights in the process of 3D replica making? This webinar will engage topics of intellectual property, Indigenous data sovereignty, and rematriation.

The Journal of Intellectual Property and Entertainment Law (JIPEL) will focus their annual Spring Symposium on IDSov. The event will be held in collaboration with ENRICH, a coordinating hub for equity concerning Indigenous research and innovation, co-directed by Jane Anderson (NYU) and Māui Hudson (University of Waikato), and the Engelberg Center on Innovation Law and Policy (NYU Law). The symposium will be organized around four panels: IDSov and Tribal Codes (Panel I), Government Agencies and IDSov (Panel II), Fair Use and IDSov (Panel III), and Labels as a Technical Protection Mechanism (Panel IV). The symposium will be hosted entirely over Zoom between two sessions (Panels I-II; March 1, 2023, Panel III-IV; March 2, 2023, Eastern Standard Time) so as to accommodate speakers from across the globe.

What recourse do Indigenous communities have to protect their rights over ceremonies, songs and narratives documented by ethnographers and now being digitized and widely circulated? What happens when songs and Ancestors come home again? Join us as we bring together tribal attorneys, experts on decolonial archives, and Tribal Historic Preservation Officers to discuss examples of these forms of archival violence, as well as legal and extralegal solutions to these problems. This event is designed for Native communities as a knowledge-sharing space. A summary report, recording, and follow-up resources will be available following the event.
